Mixed Chamber Choir VENTILKY – Jirkov

The Ventilky mixed chamber choir was founded in 1998 at the ZUŠ (Junior Music School) in Jirkov, embracing some twenty zealous singers aged over 18 years. The choir's repertory consists of works of all stylistic periods with emphasis on choral works of the 20th century – spirituals and jazz compositions in particular. The choir masters are Mgr. Luboš Hána, choir mastership major currently working at the department of music education at the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem, and Mgr. Marie Hánová, who graduated from choir mastership at the very same place.

During its existence the choir successfully participated in a number of concerts and shows; its female part was involved in recording of two CDs of „Kabát“ – a famous Czech rock band.

In June 2003 the choir won the „golden programme“ at the International Choral Competition of Bohuslav Martinů in Pardubice.

In June 2005 the choir won the „gold medal“ at the 33rd international competition called „Svátky písní Olomouc“ (the Feasts of Song in Olomouc) in a difficult category with the compulsory composition by Orlando di Lasso – „Un dubbio verno“.

The successful concert season of 2005 was concluded by the „golden programme“ at the international festival of Nativity and Christmas music – „PRAGUE CHRISTMAS“.

At the present time the choir is giving concerts in the Czech Republic and abroad as well.

Ventilky in 2007
In April several members of the choir took part in the French-German project “Forum of Young Artists” in Bayreuth, Germany, where they rehearsed Sergei Prokofiev’s lyrical-comic opera “Betrothal in a Monastery”. This stage act (the choir aspect of which was put in the hands of the choir-master of Ventilky) was subsequently presented three times in the Bayreuth Stadthalle in front of an audience of 2,500 people.

Ventilky's another achievement is organization of the choir competition festival in the field of popular music – “Jirkovský Písňovar” (Jirkov Song-Mill) www.jirkovskypisnovar.cz – the second year saw the appearance of 17 choirs amounting to over three hundred choir members (the third year's rendition will take place on October 2–4, 2009).

Arguably the greatest and certainly the hottest accomplishment of Ventilky is their successful participation in an international choir competition in Malta, organized by Musica Mundi. Eighteen choirs from thirteen European states took part in it this year. The five-day marathon of competition and concert performances in the most significant concert spaces in La Valletta (Birt, St. Augustine Church, Mediterranean Conference Centre, St. John’s C—Cathedral, etc.) was concluded by a performance of the awarded choirs in the Manoel Theatre. Ventilky competed in both categories and won the “golden programme” in each of them, however, the greatest success is their absolute first place in the category of Sacral Music, for which the choir was awarded with a valuable trophy.
